January 26 – Sunday Sinskey and Regusci

Wow what a day!  Sometimes the unplanned days turn out the best.  My friend Catherine was visiting from Denver.  We had a lunch reservation but no other plan so we got in the car and headed north on the Silverado Trail.  On the way we looked at the tourist map and noted Robert Sinskey was not too far from where we were heading for lunch.  I’ve had their Pinot Noir but knew nothing else about them.

Beautiful grounds and a nice tasting room presentation.

Kicked it off with their Abraxas (love the name) a lovely lite blend of pinot gris, pinot blanc, gewürztraminer and Riesling.  Then on to their 2010 Pinot Noir which was as delicious as I remember.  The POV was an earthy blend of Cab Sav, Merlot and Cab Franc and features some lovely label art:

We then went off menu and got to try the 2010 Merlot and learned about their first weekend tastings.  The first weekend of the month they preview their new wine club release and have a little food and wine tasting.  There is a beautiful open kitchen at the end of the tasting room where they offer a farm to table tasting every day.  We ended up with their amazing 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon.

We had a great time talking to our tasting room host and we asked him about some of his favorite places in the valley.  He told us about Regusci which was just down the road.  Never heard of them so definitely worth a try!

What we found was a small family winery that has been around since 1932.  Katie in the tasting room told us stories about how during prohibition the family ripped out all of the vines except the zinfandel and planted cash crops.  I learned of the term “the black chicken” which was the code word for a bottle of the zin that people coming to buy beef or vegetables would also ask for when they visited the winery back in the day!

We worked our way through the tasting list and each wine we tried was great!  My favorite was the 2010 Patriarch — a blend of cab sav, merlot and cab franc.

What a great find this place was!  Our tasting room friend Katie poured us another taste of our favorites and gave me some must visits to add to my list:  T-Vine, James Cole, Robert Biale and Del Dotto.  All places that are new to me!  The adventure continues!

Week 4 +2 new wineries.

6 new wineries so far this year!

Cheers!

Napa Valley Vintners, Peju

Breakfast at Peju!  Napa Valley Vintners kicked off their first ever Morning in the Winery event offering Napa residents a peak behind the scenes at five local wineries.  A few friends joined in to be at Peju at 10am to start the day with a taste of their 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon!  Then off in the misty rain to do a quick tour of this family winery with the one of the winemakers.  We were then treated to more tastings upstairs and were introduced to their “patio pounder” called Provence which was an interesting blend of red and white grapes.  Their 2010 Merlot was wonderful and I had to take advantage of their special Napa Neighbors sale for the day!

Next on to Trefethen!  We started with a barrel tasting of their 2013 Chardonnay then upstairs to try their 2012 Pinot Noir.  Lovely but at $45 a bottle I decided to save my pennies on this rainy day as there are still 48 more wineries to check out this year!

Week 2 +2 new wineries.

4 new wineries so far this year!

Napa, wine, wine tasting

Tasting rooms are popping up in Napa every week.  They are a great addition to downtown bringing it back too life but some feel there may be too many.  Really?

This was my first visit to one of these tasting rooms as I had heard Randall Grahm (of Bonny Doon fame) had some wines available through Naked Wines.  Naked Wines is essentially a cooperative where you can become an “angel” and invest to help independent winemakers produce new wines.

This week I tried his “The (G)renache Spot.” As billed it was light and juicy and fun.  It would be great for summer bbqs.  Check it out on the Naked Wines website.

As I would hate to be an underachiever I returned to downtown Napa on Sunday to watch the San Francisco 49ers game at Vermeil Wines.  I must try to win a Super Bowl some day so I can start a winery!  The Semillon and Proprietary Red were quite nice.  Plus it was a great place to watch the 49ers win!

wine tasting

At the end of December I attended a class called Secret Wines of Napa given by the Culinary Institute of America.  I was hoping to learn a bit about wineries that I had not heard of before.  In the two hour class we learned how to taste then had a “test” of six wines where we had to guess the varietal and learned about the new wineries just as I hoped.  Rather than feeling that I had checked this off my list I was instead inspired after learning that there 482 wineries in Napa alone!

Now that I am a “Napkin” I felt it was my duty to try more so as my 2014 resolution I decided to set out to try 52 new wines over the next year.  I can visit a tasting salon or a winery as long as it is not one I have been to before.  The goal can be accomplished by one a week for 52 weeks or three every third week or however I get there as long as I have 52 new wine experiences by next New Year’s Eve!
